Today we got the privilege of attending a Korean wedding. Through our church we have been set up with a 'host family'. Our host family is a young married couple who are expecting their first child in about 1 1/2 months. David, the husband, actually lived in Calgary for a bit and speaks very good English, his wife on the other hand, does not....
Anyways, David's best friend was getting married and we got an invite! Brian and I hopped on a bus to Daejon (45 minutes away from cheongju) and found our way to the VIP wedding hall (aka the wedding factory). Weddings in Korea are a bit different than what we're used to. There are multiple weddings going on all throughout the day in the hall. Everyone gets 1 hour in the actual hall and then there time is up. After the ceremony today there was some picture time. Brian and I, who had never met the bride and groom before were surprised to be asked to be in some pictures. We figured that maybe they thought foreigners were good luck or something? After the ceremony everyone goes upstairs for a big buffet, but everyone from ALL the different weddings will share the same buffet.
Overall, it was a really neat experience! A cool way to experience some more of the culture!

Love the colours, the costumes!! Maybe we'll get to see some of the traditional culture when we're there, hope so.
ReplyDeleteDid you get pictures with JUST you guys & the bride and groom?? That'd be awkward... "Thanks for letting us freeload off of your wedding!" Did they speak any english?
ReplyDeleteWeddings are such a glimpse into real local culture - what a fantastic opportunity!! I've been loving reading your blog each time you post!
