This weekend we went on a church trip to Boryeong for the mud festival! We hopped on the bus at about 9:30am and we got to Boryeong by 11:30. It's amazing that the beach and ocean is only 2 hours from Cheongju. Brian and I are both a little upset that we haven't made the trip more times this summer! We both can't get enough of the beach!!!!
It was a strange experience... There was a LOT of foreigners. We're not used to SOOOOO many foreigners speaking English in one place. I constantly found myself eavesdropping in on other people's conversations because I could understand what they were saying! The festival is also a BIG alcoholic weekend as well. When we arrived at Boryeong we were greeted by people puking and passing out at 11am. Nevertheless, the inebriated people also provided some entertainment...
Brian and I were expecting big, huge pits of mud that you could play in, but it was nothing like that. Instead they had small stations where you could paint yourself with mud. From there you could go and play in some of those big inflatable jumping things. They were really fun, but there was also HUGE lines, so we didn't bother with lots of them.
The mud festival was right along the beach so we spent much of our day there as well in the ocean and suntanning a bit. The weather turned out to be pretty nice (despite the forecast for typhoons!) We had some rain in the morning (we can officially say we've swam in the ocean in the pouring rain!) but by the afternoon it had cleared up and the sun was out in full force! Brian and I both ended up with a sunburn by the end of the day!
We stuck around for the fireworks in the evening (we almost missed them because the bus had to leave!) and then made the journey back home on the bus. Overall and awesome way to spend our Saturday!
